We have been in Nairobi, Kenya the past week and a half in search of quality yarn (chunky as they call it here….oochi as they call it in Gulu). Let’s just say, it has been an adventure. Our goal for the trip was to research other yarn options outside of shipping yarn from the states, to cut some costs as well as to support a local economy. Last week we visited a few manufacturers only to find they did not produce the types of yarn we need to make quality products. However, one of those manufacturers makes amazingly soft organic cotton material. We made a few test shirts and they turned out great. This may be something we look into more thoroughly in the future.
Today we visited a large yarn factory and got to see what the yarn process looks like. I have always been fascinated by those TV shows that show how something is produced from start to finish. We have a few more factories to visit and then it’s back to Gulu.
Outside of the yarn research our biggest highlight has been walking around the corner from our hostel to have a fruit salad every morning and evening for dessert. We pay .50 cents and tell the vendor which fruits we would like. He/she cuts them up right there and makes a fabulous fruit salad. My favorite is the avacodo, mango, pinapple blend while Trav goes for the banana, watermelon, pineapple, mango bowl. Nairobi is a huge, bustling city and it’s been fun, but we’re excited to get back to the ladies and the good life in Gulu.
It is a sweet thought--the amazing fruit salad and glad you can enjoy it since you are in the heat of the summer there and surely need refreshment. Glad you have been able to check out the yarn.
